Why switch to multi-factor authentication?
From 2025, managing .hu domains will be easier with multi-factor authentication!
For users of .hu domains, managing domain-related tasks has become even more convenient: if a domain is protected with so-called multi-factor authentication, certain processes — such as domain user changes, registrar transfers, or data modifications — can be handled more quickly and smoothly.
What is Multi-Factor Authentication?
Multi-factor authentication means the domain user switches to an identification method that uses verified contact information (such as an email address or phone number) for authentication.
The essence of multi-factor authentication is that the domain user provides contact information (like an email or phone number) through which they can be identified and which they actually control.
The domain user can choose whether to use one or multiple such factors (single-factor or multi-factor authentication – MFA).
Why is More Better?
More factors mean a higher level of security.
It provides greater protection when identification requires not just an email address, but a combination of email and phone number, for example.
This makes it more difficult for unauthorized parties to modify domain-related data.
When is Multi-Factor Authentication Needed?
Using multiple factors becomes essential when:
✓ the domain user modifies their data,
✓ changes registrar,
✓ or transfers the domain to someone else.
These processes must always be initiated through the registrar or registration partner, who starts the administration process. However, there are certain steps that the Registry must carry out directly with the user — one of these is the multi-factor authentication itself.
New Requests? Only With Multi-Factor Authentication!
A major change is that from 2025, new domain registrations can only be submitted with multi-factor authentication data — meaning that for new domains, this is no longer optional but a fundamental requirement.
It’s therefore worth enabling multi-factor authentication for existing domains as soon as possible, in order to take advantage of smoother administration and increased security.
