Any natural person who is a citizen of any country, or any legal entity from any country, may apply for a domain name, provided that no mandatory (peremptory) legal provision excludes the registration of domains by persons from the country concerned.
An applicant for a domain who does not belong to any of the following groups:
- a legal entity of, or a citizen of, a Member State of the European Union, the Council of Europe, the EEA or EFTA, or of a country sharing a border with Hungary,
- a natural person holding a Hungarian settlement permit or residence permit,
is entitled to apply only if they pursue or are commencing an economic or other activity that justifies the use of a .hu domain name. Upon request by the Registry or the Registrar, the applicant is obliged to provide appropriate proof thereof.
